Schülerinnenprojektwoche 2019
From October 14th to October 18th, the Schülerinnenprojektwoche, a 5-day workshop for girls attending grades 8 to 10, took place at the Ruhr-University. In collaboration with the zdi-Netzwerk IST.Bochum, three workshops were offered during the week.
This year’s projects discussed plasma physics, astronomy and sustainable building for the future. 10 pupils participated in the plasma project "Welt der Plasmen". Under the guidance of students and research assistants, the pupils learned about what a plasma is, where to find it in nature and how plasmas can be used for industrial applications. The process of sputtering for coating applications was demonstrated and investigated using a mobile sputtering chamber. The pupils analysed the coatings by microscopy and measurements of their optical transmission and electrical conductivity. Furthermore, they had the chance to coat a small object they brought from home. Next to jewellery, shells and coins, even a hard disk was coated. Next to the workshops, the students had the chance to ask students about their experiences at the Ruhr-University, attend a lecture on experimental physics, visit two labs and visit the show "Die Wunder des Kosmos" at the Zeiss-Planetarium in Bochum. At the end of the week, each group presented their achievements and results on posters which were presented during a poster session, followed by a quiz and pizza.

Emile Carbone besucht die Arbeitsgruppe von Prof. Czarnetzki

Am 25. Oktober 2019 wird Dr. Emile Carbone vom Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik in Garching die Arbeitsgruppe von Prof. Czarnetzki besuchen. Dr. Carbone ist Forschungsgruppenleiter der Gruppe "Plasma for Gas Conversion" und wird im Rahmen des SFB 1316 an die Ruhr-Universität Bochum eingeladen. Außerdem wird er im Rahmen der Experimentalphysik V einen Seminarvortrag zum Thema "CO2 dissociation by microwave plasmas: prospects and challenges" um 10:15 in NB 5/158 halten. Jeder, der Interesse hat, ist dazu herzlich eingeladen!

Emile Carbone visits the research group of Prof. Czarnetzki
On Oktober 25th, 2019, Dr. Emile Carbone from the Max-Planck institute for plasma physics in Garching, Germany, is going to visit the research group of Prof. Czarnetzki. Dr. Carbone is research group leader of the group Plasma for Gas Conversion and is invited to the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in the framework of the CRC 1316. Moreover, he is going to have a seminar talk at experimental physics V about "CO2 dissociation by microwave plasmas: prospects and challenges" at 10:15 in NB 5/158. Everyone who is interested is welcome to join!

Erasmus student joins CRC 1316 project
Between March 25th and July 19th, 2019 the Erasmus student Roel Michiels visits the research group EP2 of Prof. von Keudell at Ruhr University Bochum. He joins project A3 from the CRC 1316 "Excitation transfer between molecules in transient atmospheric pressure plasmas and its impact on plasma chemistry".
Roel Michiels is associated with the group of Annemie Bogaerts from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Antwerp. He finished his Bachelor thesis last year and prepares now for his Master degree. The topic of his Master thesis is micro kinteic modelling of plasma catalysis. The modelling is done via Density functional theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD).
Together with Theresa Urbanietz, Christoph Stewig, and Steffen Schüttler he tries to gain experience in experimental work in Bochum. His work here focuses on the measurement as well as on the analysis of FTIR spectra gained in the project.
