MGK Colloquium

From March 5th to 7th, the early career scientists of the CRC 1316 held their annual MGK Kolloquium in Bonn to discuss recent developments in their respective projects. The event is an opportunity for the PhD students and postdocs of the CRC to exchange information and discuss their research and challenges in a relaxed environment. Additionally, three invited speakers gave insights into a career after the PhD, either remaining in academia or finding their way into industry. First Dr. Julian Held presented on the academic career path after the PhD as an assistant professor at TU Eindhoven. Dr. Sebastian Burhenn then introduced his career path as a technology consultant at VDI Technologiezentrum. Finally, Dr. Celia Millon presented her work at RayVen Lasers and her perspective on the career path of an entrepreneur. The group also went on an excursion to the Arithmeum at Bonn University.

Unconscious Bias

(unbewusste Voreingenommenheit)

Am Dienstag, den 4. März 2025, nahmen Mitglieder des SFB 1316 an einem Workshop zum Thema „Unconscious Bias“ unter der Leitung von Dr. Juliane Handschuh teil. Ziel des Workshops war es, die Auswirkungen von Vorurteilen in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung und im allgemeinen Arbeitsumfeld zu verstehen und zu lernen, unbewusste Vorurteile bei sich selbst und am Arbeitsplatz zu erkennen. Nach einem Einführungsvortrag von Dr. Handschuh zum Thema tauschten sich die Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen und Projektleiter*innen jeweils in separaten Gruppen aus. In Vorbereitung auf den Workshop waren die Teilnehmenden aufgefordert worden, anonym persönliche Vorfälle einzureichen, in denen sie eine Voreingenommenheit erlebt hatten. Die Gruppenübungen dienten als Fallstudien und Grundlage für die Diskussion. Gemeinsam wurden Strategien entwickelt, um unbewusste Vorurteile zu erkennen und angemessen damit umzugehen, sowohl als direkt Betroffene als auch als Beobachter*in. Am Ende des Workshops trafen sich beide Gruppen noch einmal zu einer Abschlussdiskussion. Der Workshop lieferte wertvolle Einblicke in das komplexe Thema der unbewussten Vorurteile und hat den Mitgliedern des SFBs praktische Werkzeuge an die Hand gegeben, um ein inklusiveres Forschungsumfeld zu fördern.

Unconscious Bias

On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, members of the SFB 1316 participated in a workshop on the topic of Unconscious Bias led by Dr. Juliane Handschuh. The workshop's objective was to understand the impact of prejudices in scientific research and general work environments and learn to recognize unconscious biases in oneself and in the workplace. After Dr. Handschuh gave an introductory talk on the topic, the group was divided into groups of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and Principal Investigators (PIs) to encourage an open exchange. In preparation for the workshop, participants had been encouraged to anonymously submit personal incidents where they experienced a bias. The group exercises were used as case studies and foundation for discussion. Together, strategies to recognize and adequately approach unconscious biases were developed as a directly affected person and as a bystander. At the end of the workshop, both groups joined again for a final discussion. The workshop provided valuable insights into the complex topic of unconscious biases and has provided the members of the SFB with practical tools to foster a more inclusive research environment.
